The Folsom Ranch Sports Complex

Frequently
Asked Questions

The Folsom Ranch Sports Complex is an exciting new development designed to serve athletes, families, and the greater Sacramento region. As we work toward bringing this facility to life, we know the community has questions about what to expect. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about the project’s features, timeline, and vision. We’ll continue to update this page as new information becomes available.

What is the Folsom Ranch Sports Complex?

The Folsom Ranch Sports Complex is a multi-sport recreational and entertainment facility coming to Folsom Ranch. Featuring both indoor and outdoor spaces, it will host a variety of sports and events, including ice hockey, figure skating, lacrosse, rugby, and live music, serving athletes and spectators of all ages and abilities.

What facilities will be available?

The sports complex will feature:

  • Three NHL-sized ice rinks (including an approximately 3,000-seat arena)

  • 126,000 sq. ft. covered and lit turf field

  • Locker rooms and training facilities

  • Restaurant and pro shop

  • Meeting and event spaces

  • Ample parking

What kind of sports and activities will be offered?

The complex will support a wide range of activities, including:

  • Ice sports: hockey, figure skating, curling, and public skating sessions

  • Field sports: lacrosse, soccer, rugby, baseball, softball, football

  • Adaptive sports programs for all abilities

  • Training programs and camps

  • Entertainment events and community gatherings

How will this project impact the local economy?

Early economic impact reports project the sports complex to generate $23.7 million annually in new spending for Folsom through retail, lodging, food, and entertainment. It will create hundreds of jobs and serve over 1.3 million visitors annually, becoming a significant economic driver for the region.

Who is leading the project?

The Mettle Shop, a team of industry experts with over 100 years of combined experience in sports and entertainment venue development and sports operations, is leading this project. What makes this facility unique?

This sports complex stands out as the region’s first multi-sport facility of this scale, featuring:

  • Air-quality-controlled environments for year-round play

  • Weather-protected outdoor facilities that ensure safe participation during the region’s extreme weather conditions

  • Inclusive spaces for youth, adult, and adaptive sports programs

  • Tournament-capable facilities to attract regional competitions

  • Community-focused design encouraging multi-generational participation

How is the project funded?

The sports complex will be funded through significant private investment.

Is there a demand for this type of space?

Yes. Sacramento County is the largest county in the U.S. without a dedicated NHL-sized hockey rink within a 30-minute drive for most residents. Currently, the only two year-round ice sheets are in Roseville and have been oversubscribed for years. This facility will serve 530,000 people within a 10-mile radius and over 2 million within a 25-mile radius.

Will there be an impact on Highway 50 or local traffic?

Construction of the project will occur in the Folsom Ranch area off Highway 50 Exit 25, Prairie City Road. A full traffic study will be completed as part of the city’s review process, and traffic impacts will be mitigated. For large events, we will implement special event traffic management and parking plans similar to those used for other major city venues and programs.

Has the City of Folsom already approved the Folsom Ranch Sports Complex?

No. The development application was submitted on April 23, 2025, and is under review by the city. The project will require public hearings at both the Planning Commission and City Council, which are not expected to occur until late 2025 at the earliest. Community members will have opportunities to provide input throughout the process.
